ALFIE UPDATE! Ok I am going to try to explain this the best way I know how and understand. I will start off with saying Alfie is in critical and guarded condition, that has never changed 😩 Now his test results are coming in and Doc relayed to us:
“ All the infectious disease testing came back negative. I suppose it’s good news /bad news. We added
an additional immunosuppressive medication today. Honestly if there is no significant improvement in platelet function in 3 days (sat) I may consider stopping unfortunately 😞 I would probably still treat with doxycycline for now despite this result because there are likely some diseases that exist which we don’t have on a panek (name )for and it doesn’t hurt”

Now the skin biopsies are coming back and are negative for pemphigus as well 😩 Alfie is a real mystery and challenge. Here is what we do know, his platelets have gone up to 37k which is great HOWEVER his hematocrit has dropped to 17 from 22 😩 We suspect at this point he has IMHA which is a disease in which the immune system reacts against red blood cells. When this happens, red cells are destroyed, anemia results and oxygen is greatly reduced. This can be fatal 😩 Now if, and that is a very big IF, Alfie turns a corner, we will reach out for a consult with DVM John Angus of Animal Dermatology Clinic Pasadena for his skin. That is quite a way down the road right now due to his blood disease 😩

Alfie is being treated and if his hematocrit drops below 15 we will do a transfusion. If at that point he turns a corner we will keep on going HOWEVER if his body rejects it and destroys it, we will have to make a decision 😩

I posted his newest estimate HOWEVER we DO NOT NEED DONATIONS at this point as we have him covered 😊 What he does need is your continued prayers 🙏🙏🙏 I will update as I learn more 🙏🙏🙏 He is receiving the best of care and as long as he can keep going, we are going to keep going with him 🙏🙏🙏
